The Pyrolysis Boiler

Clean Energy. Safer Communities. Practical Impact

Introduction

At Olgeta Foundation, we believe that real change comes from practical solutions that improve everyday life.

The Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative is built on that belief — a simple, scalable approach to providing safe, reliable energy for remote communities, while reducing plastic pollution, environmental harm, and creating new opportunities at a local level.

The Problem We Are Solving

Across many remote communities in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, access to safe and reliable energy remains a daily challenge.

Families often rely on:

  • Open fires for cooking

  • Diesel that is expensive and difficult to transport

  • Wood collection that contributes to deforestation

These challenges are not just inconvenient — they impact:

  • Health, through smoke inhalation and unsafe cooking conditions

  • Environment, through ongoing forest degradation

  • Household income, with energy costs consuming a significant portion of earnings

At the same time, waste — especially plastic — continues to accumulate, with no practical way to manage it.

Communities are left managing two problems at once:
lack of energy and growing waste.

What the Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative Is

The Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative introduces small-scale, community-based energy systems that convert waste into usable heat and energy.

These systems are:

  • Simple and robust

  • Designed for remote conditions

  • Operated locally by communities

At its core, the initiative turns a problem — waste — into a resource.

Instead of burning rubbish in the open or letting it accumulate, communities can safely process it and generate energy for:

  • Cooking

  • Heating

  • Basic daily needs

It is not a large, complex infrastructure project.

It is a practical tool, designed to work where it is needed most.

Our Approach

Like everything Olgeta does, this initiative starts with the community.

We do not arrive with solutions already decided.
We work alongside local leaders to ensure systems are:

  • Appropriate to the environment

  • Understood by the people using them

  • Fully owned and operated at the community level

The process includes:

  • Community consultation and planning

  • Installation of small-scale boiler systems

  • Hands-on training for local operation and maintenance

  • Ongoing support to ensure long-term use

The goal is not just installation — it is independence and continuity.

Impact

The Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative is designed to deliver immediate and lasting benefits:

  • Safer households with reduced smoke and fire risk

  • Lower energy costs for families

  • Reduced environmental damage, including less deforestation

  • Cleaner communities, with waste put to use instead of discarded

  • Local ownership, creating responsibility and pride in the system

Even small systems can:

  • Remove significant amounts of waste from the environment

  • Provide consistent energy for multiple households

  • Reduce harmful emissions compared to traditional fuel use

  •

Where We Are

The Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative is currently being developed through partnerships with technical providers and local stakeholders.

We are building on proven systems already tested in Pacific environments, adapting them for:

  • Remote island conditions

  • Community-scale use

  • Long-term sustainability

Our focus is not speed — it is getting it right, so communities can rely on these systems for years to come.

How This Connects to Olgeta’s Mission

Olgeta Foundation focuses on practical, hands-on support — from medical missions to infrastructure and community-led projects.

The Pyrolysis Boiler Initiative is a natural extension of that work.

It is about:

  • Solving real problems

  • Supporting self-sufficiency

  • Creating solutions that last beyond our involvement

It reflects a simple idea:
communities should have the tools to improve their own lives — in ways that are safe, sustainable, and within their control.

Get Involved

If you believe in practical solutions that create real impact, we would love to connect.

Whether you are:
