Marine Conservation
Protecting Papua New Guinea’s Ocean Heritage
Papua New Guinea is home to extraordinary marine biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs and coastal communities whose lives and traditions are deeply connected to the ocean.
At Olgeta Foundation, we believe that protecting these remarkable marine environments requires scientific research, meaningful partnerships, traditional knowledge and practical action.
Through MV Golden Dawn, we provide essential vessel and logistical support for conservation initiatives in remote locations where access and resources are often limited.
Supporting Science and Conservation
Olgeta Foundation collaborates with Coral Sea Foundation and Sea Women of Melanesia to facilitate marine research, reef monitoring and community-based conservation initiatives.
Our role is to help bring researchers, Indigenous women conservationists, equipment and essential supplies to remote marine environments.
One example is the Gabagaba Reef Survey Training Expedition, where Sea Women of Melanesia participated in underwater surveys and reef monitoring activities, contributing to scientific understanding and locally led conservation efforts.
Empowering Local Communities
We believe that lasting marine conservation begins with the people whose lives depend on the ocean.
Indigenous women are important contributors to marine conservation in Papua New Guinea. Through our partnerships, we help create opportunities for local conservation teams to participate in research expeditions, develop practical skills and contribute to the protection of their traditional marine environments.
Combining traditional ecological knowledge with scientific research can help communities make informed decisions about managing and protecting their reefs and marine resources.
MV Golden Dawn — Supporting Conservation at Sea
Effective marine conservation often depends on reaching remote islands, reefs and coastal environments.
MV Golden Dawn serves as an expedition support vessel, providing transport, accommodation and operational assistance for marine research and conservation teams.
By making these capabilities available through collaborative, cost-conscious operations, Olgeta Foundation helps conservation partners undertake fieldwork in locations where access can otherwise be difficult and expensive.
Our Commitment
For Olgeta Foundation, marine conservation is a long-term commitment to Papua New Guinea’s natural environment and the communities who depend on it.
We are proud to work alongside conservation organisations, researchers, volunteers and local communities dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems and strengthening local conservation efforts.
Protecting our oceans.
Empowering communities.
Preserving our natural heritage.

Olgeta Foundation proudly partners with Coral Sea Foundation and Sea Women of Melanesia to support marine conservation, scientific research and Indigenous women's leadership in Papua New Guinea. Through MV Golden Dawn, we help bring researchers and local communities together to study coral reefs, protect marine biodiversity and inspire future generations to care for their ocean heritage.

Exploring the Bismarck Sea’s Underwater Volcano
n May 2026, an extraordinary underwater volcanic eruption transformed the waters of Papua New Guinea’s Bismarck Sea. Olgeta Foundation supported scientific exploration associated with this rare event by providing MV Golden Dawn as a research support vessel, helping advance our understanding of the ocean’s hidden geological world.
